CERAMIC
PACKAGING

School 2nd Cycle NOW/THEN Project | Physical | 2016

Overview

To address the environmental impact of traditional packaging in the art and design industries, I developed a sustainable packaging solution for ceramics. The design features two wooden frames and an elastic wire net that suspends the ceramic piece, reducing the need for paper or bubble wrap.

INSIGHT

If we changed the starting point for product development and begun with the end of the life of the product, just when it is about to enter it’s 2ND CYCLE and brought the analysis of that stage into the conception of the brief. Maybe we can create true cyclic concepts that potentially can prevent global warming and deterioration of Earth’s systems from happening, and push the Earth Overshoot day back well after New Year’s eve.

In this project, I focus more on product packaging mainly due to there are lots of waste and unreasonable parts when they are designed, which in my view can be an apparent linear system. After I talked to a ceramic artist who has a workshop in Lund, I made my decision to design a package for ceramic.

Why ceramic?

Ceramics are unique artworks with varying shapes and sizes, often created by different artists, so standard packaging solutions don't apply. Additionally, ceramics are very fragile and require highly protective packaging. Designing a suitable package for ceramics presents an intriguing challenge.

Traditional Ceramic Packaging

Traditional packaging prioritizes the security of the items, often requiring forceful opening and lacking reuse potential. Since ceramics are artworks, I aimed to design packaging that not only protects but also serves as a piece of art itself.

IDEATION

These concepts focus on securing ceramics with wire. My final design uses two wooden frames and an elastic wire net to suspend the ceramic piece. This approach ensures convenient and safe packaging and shipping. Additionally, the elastic wire can be easily detached from the wooden frames for recycling.

Exhibition Display

The ceramic packaging doubles as an exhibition stand. The wooden frames can be reconfigured in various ways to create a custom display for each ceramic piece.
